What to Expect from Your First Session

Updated: Oct 27, 2021

If you're new to therapy, the idea of it might be daunting. I want you to be as comfortable as possible, so here's a bit of information about what actually goes on during a session.

After your appointment is scheduled, you'll gain access to the client portal where you'll be able to fill out paperwork ahead of time whenever is convenient for you. We also ask you to enter your debit, credit, or HSA card information into the secure program in order to streamline the billing process (we use SimplePractice which uses Stripe for billing). At this time, all of my appointments are virtual to protect the health of my clients, so I use secure video chat. Checking to see that your camera and microphone are working properly before the start of the appointment will allow us to get the most out of our time.

Our first appointment will be an evaluation appointment where we work together to determine your goals and expectations for therapy. This will help us decide how often we are going to meet in the future and what we are going to be focusing our time and energy on. This is also a chance to get to know my and decide if you'd like to continue a working relationship, so feel free to ask me questions to get to know me better.

After we get some of the logistics taken care of, we can discuss your history to get a sense of context. There's no pressure to bare your entire soul during the first appointment (although if you want to, that's totally fine as well). I do encourage you, however, to be honest so that you can get the most out of our time together. If you don't want to tell me something, that is absolutely your right! Just communicate that to me, and we can talk about it if/when you decide you would like to. Remember that I am not here to judge your actions or emotions! We come together as a team where we are and move forward from there.
